Rafe Beddy was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire to Colonel Edwin Fawcett Beddy of the Indian Army Corps and Harriet Alice (Langdon).
His parents were married in Bengal, India and all his older siblings were born and baptised there. In 1911 the family was living in Wales and it is not known when they arrived in Budleigh Salterton.
Mentioned in Despatches, Lt Rafe Beddy died on 4 June, 1915, aged 27, while serving with the 1st Battalion of the Gurkha Rifles (Frontier Force) and is buried at Pink Farm Cemetery in Helles, on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey.
Colonel Beddy died in Hampshire in 1919 but Mrs Beddy and family must have come to Budleigh Salterton in the early 1920s for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to put Budleigh Salterton as their abode. They lived in West Hill Lodge for many years with Mrs Beddy dying in 1941 and her unmarried sons and daughters surviving into the 1960s.
