Born in Budleigh Salterton to Edward Osment Burch and Kate Amanda (Thorn), Edward and his parents lived at 43 High Street until, in 1911, he was recorded as a banker’s clerk boarding in Bath, Somerset.
He married Florence Lillie (Erwood) in Bath later in 1911 and a daughter was born in 1912 in the Plymouth area.
Edward Gerald Burch enlisted in Exeter in December 1915 giving his address as ‘Northfield’ Greenway Lane, Budleigh Salterton, so they had moved back to Budleigh.
He served in 227th Siege Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery, and is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery. It is now known that he died of Influenza and pneumonia in a CC Station in France.
Edward Senior was a builder in Budleigh Salterton and as he and his wife died in 1911 and 1914 respectively they would not have known of their son’s death in the conflict. They are buried in St Peter’s Cemetery, Moor Lane and a tribute has been added to Edward Gerald Burch.
