Samuel was born around 1886, the son of Thomas Pile Lawrence and Susan Pile Lawrence, of Hayes Barton, just outside East Budleigh.
He was a member of the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry, a Territorial Force which was sent to Gallipoli late in 1915, and from there went to Alexandria to help defend Egypt. It later went to Palestine, capturing Jerusalem. By the middle of 1918, the Yeomanry was sent to France to take part in the final bid to defeat the Germans.
Corporal 1386 Lawrence died in East Budleigh on 20 October 1918, aged 32, and is buried in All Saints’ Churchyard in the village. He is also remembered with honour on the village war memorial.
