The census of 1901 shows that a six-year-old Mark Luxton was living at Little Potheridge Cottage in Merton, the son of Samuel and Alice Mary Luxton. Father Samuel was an agricultural labourer.
Mark Luxton signed up in Barnstaple, and was serving in the 1st Battalion of the Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment when he was killed in action in Flanders on 4 October 1917, aged 23.
He is remembered on the memorial in the church in Merton, and at the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium for those who fell in and around Ypres, but who have no known grave.
