Ernest Miller was born in Beer on 11 August 1876, the son of William Miller, a fishmonger, and his wife Susan.
He joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 6 September 1898, at which point he was living at 3 Sea View Terrace, and fishing on the E152. His RNR record shows him as 5ft 9ins tall, with hazel eyes and a ruddy complexion.
Ernest was called up on 3 August 1914 and joined HMS Albion. He served in the Mediterranean and in the Dardanelles.
Apart from brief periods ashore at HMS Vivid, Plymouth, Ernest stayed on Albion until he was demobilised on 11 February 1919.
