Walter was born in Exmouth in December 1892, the son of Alfred and Harriet West.
Stoker First Class 24833 West was serving aboard HMS Indefatigable when she became involved in the Battle of Jutland, the largest naval engagement of the Great War.
Indefatigable was hit several times in the early part of the engagement, with shells from the battlecruiser Von der Tann ripping a hole in her hull. She blew up and sank with the loss of more than 1,000 lives, with only two survivors.
Stoker West, who died aged 23, is remembered on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, and on the East Budleigh memorials.
