Private Oliver Carter, 787869, was the son of Ellis and Jane Carter, of East Budleigh, and was born in 1862.
He moved out of the area, and was the husband of Elizabeth Jane Carter, of Budleigh House, Newtown, Highbridge, a market town on the Somerset Levels.
He served with the 1st Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry, which was a regular army battalion, formerly known as the 1st Somerset Rifle Volunteer Corps.
The 1st Battalion served on the Western Front throughout the Great War.
Private Carter died of pneumonia on 31 May 1918, aged 57, and is remembered with honour at Highbridge Cemetery, Burnham-on-Sea.
