Born in Banstead, Surrey to Captain Seymour Henry Pelham Dacres and Ethel Christiana (Lambert), by 1891 Leonard was living in Hove, Sussex with his widowed mother and younger sister Winifred.
His father had been a Captain in the Royal Navy and died in The Royal Navy Hospital in Yokohama, Japan in 1888.
Leonard was educated at Uppingham School, Rutland and at some point joined the Indian Army Reserve. He died of typhus in Baghdad while serving in the Political Department of the Indian Army Reserve of Officers.
He is remembered on the Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery. His mother continued to live in Sussex but is listed in the Post Office Directories as living at Park House, Budleigh Salterton in the early 1920s and on his certificate from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. She died in Hove in 1936.
