Born in Wood Green, North London to George Daniel and Sarah Ann (Brimacombe), Charles lived there with his father who was a chemist and sub-postmaster in High Street, Wood Green, and his mother and older siblings.
The family retired to Budleigh Salterton and are listed at Tullows, Leas Road by 1923. Both parents were born in Devon at Bradford and Holsworthy respectively.
His older brother George Brimmacombe Daniel continued the chemist shop in Wood Green well into the 1930s. Private Daniel served with the 2nd/4th Battalion of the London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers) and is remembered at the Etaples Military Cemetery south of Boulogne, which is the largest Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in France.
