Private Deem was the husband of Mabel Staddon (formerly Deem), of Brookside, East Budleigh.
The son of Charles and Bessie Deem, Private Charles Deem, 201607, served with the 2nd/4th Battalion of the Gloucester Regiment. The 2nd/4th was a Territorial unit, also known as the City of Bristol battalion, and for the first two years of the war served on the home front before being sent to France in May 1916.
Private Deem died on 21 May, 1917, and is remembered with honour at Higher Cemetery Exeter, where he is buried.
