Born in Upton Pyne, Stephen was the son of William Thomas and Harriet whose address was later recorded as East Budleigh.
In the census of 1911, Stephen was shown as an assistant grocer living in Well Cottage, Knowle.
Some time after that he presumably emigrated to New Zealand, as that country’s military records show him embarking from Wellington as a member of the New Zealand Field Artillery in October 1914, bound for Egypt. Records show he had gone to New Zealand on the same voyage as Reginald Cowd, whose brother Frank Cowd died in Mesopotamia.
Those records also show Stephen was single, and his next of kin was given as his brother Albert Prew, care of Mrs Hain of Otahuhu, Auckland.
Gunner 2/734 Prew was killed in action on 15 September 1915 at Gallipoli.
His final resting place is unknown, and he is remembered with honour at the Chunuk Bair (New Zealand) Memorial in Canakkale, Turkey; on the New Zealand Roll of Honour in Aukland; and on the East Budleigh memorials.
Stephen Prew, Gunner, New Zealand Artillery, is listed under 'Died in their Country's Service' in the Budleigh Salterton Roll of Honour.
