The son of George and Emily Farrant of East Budleigh, and the husband of Gertrude Farrant of Morice Square, Devonport, PO 172648 Farrant served on board HMS Thunderer.
Thunderer, the largest, and last, warship ever built on the River Thames, was an Orion class battleship launched in 1911. She formed part of the 2nd Battle Squadron of the Royal Navy’s Grand Fleet, along with her sister ships Orion, Conqueror and Monarch.
She was refitted at the end of 1914, and survived the Battle of Jutland unscathed, being decommissioned after the war and going on to serve as a training ship.
Petty Officer First Class Alfred John Farrant is remembered with honour on the East Budleigh Memorial, and on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
