Wallace Harding was born in Otterton on 20 February, 1878. He lived with his grandparents, Thomas and Amelia Harding, and his single Aunt Emily - who was probably in reality his mother.
No records of service exist for Wallace, but the census of 1901 tells us he was then an Able Seaman, and he was shown as a Petty Officer in the census of 1911.
On 13 August, 1917, Wallace went down with his ship, HMS Bergamot, in the North Atlantic. For more on the loss of Bergamot, see Devon Men in the Royal Navy on this site.
Petty Officer 1st Class Harding is remembered with honour in Otterton and on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
