Pioneer John T Mitchell, service number 286230, served with the 74th Field Company of the Royal Engineers.
He is recorded as being the son of James Mitchell.
The 74th Field Company served with the 15th (Scottish) Division during the Great War.
By mid 1918, the Allies were becoming more confident they could defeat the Germans on the Western Front, and the phase of the war from then onwards is often called the Advance to Victory.
Towards the end of October 1918, just days before the Germans called for an armistice and an end to the fighting, the 15th (Scottish) Division was involved in what was called the Final Advance in Artois. It is possible that it was during this advance that Pioneer Mitchell lost his life.
He is remembered with honour on the memorial in the church in Merton, and at the Cambrin Military Cemetery in the Pas de Calais, France.
