George Alison was born in Bermuda to Sir Archibald Alison – 3rd Baronet – and Georgina Bond-Cabbell where Sir Archibald was Colonial Secretary.
He was educated at Malvern and Sandhurst and gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the Seaforth Highlanders in 1909; he was promoted to Lieutenant in 1913 and Captain 1915. He was Aide-de-Camp to Sir Henry May, Governor of Hong Kong from 1913-1914 and at the start of the war travelled to France to join his regiment.
He was twice wounded, in December 1914 and in June 1915 and was mentioned in dispatches. He was killed in action at the 1st battle of the Somme, and his comrades buried him alongside about a hundred Seaforth Highlanders.
It is not known when the Alison family arrived in Budleigh Salterton but a memorial service was held in St Peter’s Church for Captain Alison, and Sir Archibald and Lady Georgina Alison were buried in St Peter’s Cemetery, Moor Lane in 1921 and 1939 respectively. They lived at Possill House, Marine Parade, Budleigh Salterton.
Captain Alison is remembered on the Budleigh Salterton War Memorial, on the brass plaque in St Peter’s Church and with his parents in St Peter’s Cemetery, Moor Lane.
