Christopher Harry Baker was born in Otterton in 1897 and educated at Otterton School. He was the fourth of five children of Herbert and Elizabeth Baker of Cross Tree, Ottery Street.
His father, Herbie, his grandfather, and also his elder brother, were carpenters.
Christopher Harry was probably known as Harry (he was Harry in the 1911 census). His brother Frank appears in a photo of ex-servicemen in 1920, but there is no record of the unit in which he served.
There is no record of service for Harry Baker, so we do not know when he enlisted, or when he was transferred to the Hampshire Regiment. It would seem likely that he died in action on the Somme at the Battle of St Quentin (21-23 March) in which 11th Hampshires took part and were involved in heavy losses.
