William Carter was born towards the end of 1893 in Harpford where his father was farming. His parents were Sydenham and Susan Carter.
In 1906 the family moved to The Barton, Otterton. The farmhouse is still there, but the farm buildings have been converted into a courtyard development, Rolle Barton.
William was the youngest of nine children, six boys and three girls. He was educated at the grammar school in Ottery St Mary, as were Percy Please and Frank White, whose names are also on the Otterton War Memorial
No service records survive for William so we do not know when he enlisted, nor do we know why he was serving in the Royal Berkshire Regiment. William was killed in action on 24 August 1918, very likely at the 2nd battle of Bapaume which took place between 21 August and 3 September in which 1 Royal Berks were deployed.
