Born in Stepney, Middlesex to Herbert Henry Harding and Ellen (Smith), young Herbert lived with his parents in Surrey and by 1911 had moved to Exmouth before the family moved to Granary Lane, Budleigh Salterton.
Herbert J Harding enlisted in Exmouth in October 1915, and served with B Battery of the 107th Brigade if the Royal Field Artillery. He had been a member of the Budleigh Salterton Town Band. His parents continued to live at Birds Eye View, Otterview Terrace until their deaths in 1936 and 1943.
They are buried in St Peter’s Cemetery, Moor Lane. Herbert Senior was a journeyman carpenter and travelled to London and Surrey with his job where he met his wife Ellen, who came from Dorking, Surrey. Gunner Harding is remembered on the War Memorial and the brass plaque in St Peter’s Church in Budleigh Salterton, and at the Railway Dugouts Burial Ground, also known as Transport Farm, in Belgium.
