Gerald was born in Wroughton, Wiltshire to William Courtenay Howard Clack and Florence (Moore). Sadly his mother died soon after he was born and his father employed a governess to look after Gerald and his older brother Lionel.
By 1911 Gerald was living in Slapton, Devon where his father had married the governess, and a daughter was born. There is no record of when the family arrived in Budleigh but they must have been there by early 1920s for Gerald’s name to be included on the war memorial.
His father was buried in St Peter’s Cemetery in 1933 after having lived at Stoneborough Cottage. Gerald is remembered with honour on the war memorial and the brass plaque in St Peter’s Church. A Private, he served with the 6th Battalion of the Wiltshire Regiment, and is also remembered at the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium, alongside almost 12,000 other Allied servicemen.
