Rank: Private 35464 Regiment: 10th Bn., Royal Warwickshire Regiment Died: 18/04/1918 Age: 35y Parish: Budleigh Salterton Local Memorials: Budleigh Salterton War Memorial, St Peter's Church War Memorial Other Memorial: Tyne Cot Memorial [Google] PDF Download: DIXEY Joseph Edward
Joseph was born in Bampton, Oxfordshire to John Dixey and Eliza (Beechey) and lived in Swindon and Hanwell, Middlesex, with his parents.
He married Ethel Jane Turner there in 1910 and was living there in 1911 with her and a son Stanley, who sadly only lived a few months. His occupation was given as groundsman at the West Middlesex Golf Club.
His residence on enlisting was given as Budleigh Salterton so one can only assume that he had found work there, perhaps at the East Devon Golf Club. There is no reference in the records locally of his existence so someone at the Golf Club obviously thought highly of him and had his name put on the war memorial.
Serving with the 10th Battalion of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, he died on April 8, 1918, and is remembered at the Tyne Cot Memorial and on the war memorial and the brass plaque in St Peter’s Church. His widow continued to live in Ealing until her death in 1933.
