Walter Hawker was born in Beer on 24 February 1889, the son of John Hawker, a gardener, and his wife Mary.
Walter joined the Dorsetshire Regiment as a private, but was later transferred to the 2nd Garrison Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.
His medal index cards shows that he went off to active service overseas at some point from the beginning of 1916, but does not show the theatre of war involved.
Other records show that the 2nd Garrison Battalion, which was formed in Newcastle in October 1915, went to India in February 1916 and served in Poona and Ahmednagar.
Walter died in 1976, aged 87.
