John Hill was born around 1877, the son of Samuel and Jane Hill, of Woodbury.
He married Annie Hill and the couple lived in East Budleigh. Widow Annie is recorded as living at Porch Cottage at the end of the war.
Records show that he enlisted in Exeter. At the time of his death, aged 40, he was serving with the 11th Battalion of the Royal Leicestershire Regiment, with the army number 46490, although he had previously been in the Royal Engineers.
He is remembered with honour at the Birr Cross Roads Cemetery in Belgium, where he is buried along with more than 800 of his Commonwealth brothers-in-arms, as well as on the war memorial and plaque in East Budleigh.
