Reginald was born in Devonport to John Marchant and Eva (Hyne) and in 1901 was recorded as living with his grandmother Mary Ann Marchant , following the death of his mother in1894. By 1911 he was a butcher’s apprentice in the High Street, Budleigh Salterton with the Webber family.
Reginald served with the 1st Battalion of the Royal Berkshire Regiment. His father John Marchant was a plumber and served with the Royal Navy during WW1. John married for a second time in 1906 to Malvina Augusta Mercer and they lived at 13 Otterview Terrace, Granary Lane, Budleigh Salterton. They are both buried in St Peter’s Cemetery, Moor Lane.
Reginald is remembered on the Budleigh Salterton War Memorial and the brass plaque in St Peter’s Church, and on the Arras Memorial, which commemorates almost 35,000 servicemen from the United Kingdom, South Africa and New Zealand who died in the Arras sector between the spring of 1916 and 7 August 1918, who have no known grave.
