Born in India 15th September 1892 to Arthur Stothert Penny and Charlotte Mary (Baker).
He is living with his parents and two sisters in Heston, Middlesex in 1901 and with his Mother and sister in 1911 in Talbot Road, Highgate, Middlesex. His father died in 1908 in Tavistock, Devon, abode Heston, Middlesex, and is buried in Budleigh Salterton’s St Peter’s Cemetery, Moor Lane.
At first it was difficult to understand his connection with Budleigh Salterton but by contacting a member of the family and further research in the parish registers of Budleigh Salterton, held at the Fairlynch Museum, it has been established that his mother was the daughter of Henry Gouldney Baker a well-respected resident and Solicitor living in The Lawn. Sadly his grandparents and father died before Arthur’s tragic death on the first day on the Somme. His Mother died in 1933 and is also buried in Budleigh Salterton although her abode was in Maida Vale, London.
He is inscribed on the family gravestone in St Peter's Cemetery, Moor Lane, Budleigh Salterton.
Arthur Hugh Penny, Capt, 2nd East Lancashire Regt is listed under 'Army (Active Service) in the Budleigh Salterton Roll of Honour.
