Robert Rowe was born in Beer on the 18 November 1898, the youngest of the eight children of William Rowe, a fisherman, and his wife Mary. He was the brother of Norman Charles Rowe. At the time of the 1911 census the family was living at 2 Gordon Terrace, Beer.
Robert joined the Royal Navy as an Ordinary Seaman on 2 March 1917, and gave his occupation as steward on a merchant ship. His RN record describes him as 5ft 9ins tall, with fair hair, hazel eyes and a fresh complexion.
After training at HMS Vivid at Plymouth he joined HMS Resolution on 12 September 1917. Resolution was a Revenge-class battleship with eight 15-inch guns and a crew of 909, and was part of the 1st Battle Squadron, an element of the Grand Fleet, based at Scapa Flow in the Orkneys.
Robert died in 1954, aged 55.
