Born in East Budleigh, Charles was the son of George and Lucie Smith of Woodbine Cottage, East Budleigh.
The census of 1911 shows he was an apprentice bricklayer, but by 1918 he was a sergeant in the 2nd Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment. The 2nd Battalion, a pre-war unit, was moved to France in November 1914 from its original base in Egypt.
Sergeant 20390 Smith is remembered with honour on Soissons Memorial which commemorates almost 4,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom forces who died during the Battles of the Aisne and the Marne in 1918 and who have no known grave.
He is also remembered on the East Budleigh memorials.
