Lawrence (or Laurence) White was born in Branscombe on 30 November 1896, the son of John and Rosetta White of Marine Cottage, Branscombe.
In the Absent Voters’ List for spring 1919, Lawrence, who then gave his address as 5 Belmont Terrace, Beer (the same as his brothers Melville, Robert and Peter), was shown as being a Lance Corporal in the 19th Corps Cyclist Battalion. Brother Leicester also served.
His army service record has not survived, and no medal index card has been found, so it is not possible to provide further details of his war service. We do, however, know that he also served in the army in the Second World War. He joined the Worcestershire Regiment, but was later attached to the Nigeria Regiment, and died in Nigeria on 11 June 1941.
