The son of William Henry and Elizabeth Ann Stuart, of Brookside Cottage, East Budleigh, Albert served with the Dorsetshire Regiment, and died on 11 July, 1917 in Mesopotamia, modern-day Iraq.
He was the last of three brothers to die in the war, Arthur and Charles having been killed in the previous two years.
Burial records reveal that Private Albert Edward Stuart, 24198, who served with A company in the Dorsetshire’s 2nd Battalion died of sunstroke, aged 19. He had earlier served in the Devonshire Regiment, with the number 23144.
He is remembered with honour at the Basra War Cemetery, and on the memorials in East Budleigh.
