John was born in Worcester to John Pyke Marshall and his wife Rebecca Mary (Palmer) He lived with them in Stourbridge but then moved to the south coast where he became a draper, and lived in Southsea.
His parents moved to Budleigh Salterton before 1891 and had a draper’s and millinery shop at 3 High Street. The parents died here in the 1920s and are buried in St Peter’s Cemetery, Moor Lane.
John, who served with the 8th Battalion of the Gloucester Regiment, is remembered on the Budleigh Salterton War Memorial and the brass plaque in St Peter’s Church. He is also remembered on the memorial in Southsea, Hampshire as a member of staff of the Handleys store in the town (the business was later taken over by Debenhams), and at the Guards Cemetery at Windy Corner, Cuinchy.
