Like his brothers, Arthur served in the Devonshire Regiment. He was with the 1st/4th Battalion, which was a Territorial force which early in the war was sent to India. In March 1916 the battalion landed at Basra, in modern-day Iraq.
Private 3349 Stuart died on 1 August 1916, aged 25, and is remembered with honour on the Basra Memorial, near his brother Albert, and is also remembered on the East Budleigh memorials.
Thirty-nine other men who are honoured on the Basra Memorial, for those who have no known graves, died on the same day as Arthur. A further five are buried in the Basra War Cemetery.
