Rank: Private 16541 Regiment: 9th Bn., Devonshire Regiment Died: 04/09/1916 Age: 20 Parish: Budleigh Salterton Other Memorial: Thiepval Memorial; Lapford war memorial; Zeal Monachorum memorial panel [Google] PDF Download: WEBBER Vivian Stewart
Vivian was born in 1896 in Lapford, Mid Devon, to William Baker Stewart and Mary Jane (nee Elliott).
In 1891 William and Mary Jane were living in Abbotsham near Bideford in north Devon, with their two eldest children. William was a constable with the Devon Constabulary.
By 1901 they were back in Mid Devon, in Lapford, where Vivian was born, and his father was a police pensioner and farmer. By 1911 they were living in Zeal Monachorum, Mid Devon.
Vivian enlisted in Exeter and named Bow, near Crediton, as his residence. He served with the 9th Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment.
On his Commonwealth War Graves Commission certificate it states Private 16541 Vivian Stuart Webber is the son of William Baker Webber of Budleigh Salterton. However, nothing can be found to confirm this fact.
His brothers and sisters seem to be living in the Newton Abbot area of Devon and his father died in Wiltshire in 1927.
Vivian is remembered with honour on the Lapford war memorial, on a memorial panel in Zeal Monachorum parish church (spelt Vyvyan) and on the Thiepval Memorial on the Somme.
