Born in Budleigh Salterton, Walter lived with his parents Walter Robert and Georgina (Bovett) at 13 Queen Street. In 1911 he was recorded in the census as a butcher.
Walter saw service with the Ninth Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment, and died in September 1916, as the Battle of the Somme was being fought. His father died in 1923 not long after the Budleigh Salterton War Memorial was erected, and his mother continued to live in Queen Street until her death in 1955 at the grand age of 92.
He is remembered with honour on the town War Memorial and the brass plaque in St Peter’s Church and at the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.
