Private 20800 William Bastow of the 1st Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment died on 23 April, 1917, aged 21.
A local newspaper report at the time stated: “Mr and Mrs Bastow have received a notification from the War Office that their son, Pte W. Bastow, whom we reported as missing some time ago, was killed on the 23rd April, 1917. Deceased was greatly respected by all who knew him.”
He is remembered with honour at the Arras Memorial in northern France, alongside thousands of Commonwealth servicemen who have no known grave, and on the plaque in the church in Merton.
