Private 9730 William Jesse Clapp served with the 1st Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment which in the early months of the war, as a regular battalion of the army, landed in France.
It fought in the Battle of La Bassee in northern France, which was called the Race to the Sea, which lasted from 10 October to 2 November 1914.
As Private Clapp died on 23 October 1914, it is likely he was a casualty of that action. He is remembered on the Le Touret Memorial which honours 13,400 British soldiers who have no known grave, and on the memorial plaque at St John’s Church, Colaton Raleigh.
