Percy Harold Please, the son of Percy Hooper Please and his wife Ada, was born 25 December, 1894, in Otterton.
He was known as Harold and was one of four children. The family lived at Cross Tree Farm which his father farmed but his main occupation was manager of the local brick works; he was also the first Clerk to the Parish Council.
Harold was educated at the grammar school in Ottery St Mary. The 1911 Census shows him as "farmer's son, working on farm". No service records exist for Harold.
At the time of his death, the 1st Devons were fighting around Ypres.
