Rank: Private 30549 Regiment: 1st Bn., Devonshire Regiment Died: 04/10/1918 Age: c19 Parish: Budleigh Salterton Local Memorials: Budleigh Salterton War Memorial, St Peter's Church War Memorial Other Memorial: Tyne Cot Memorial; stockland.org.uk/honour [Google] PDF Download: WEBBER Sidney Hugh
Sidney was born in Highampton to Clement Webber and Mary Ann (nee Gill).
The family moved to Stockland after Sidney’s mother died in 1903. His father married again and was the publican at the Rising Sun Inn in the village.
By 1911 Sidney was living with his Uncle George James Webber and his wife Jane (nee Chown) in Stockland. George James and Jane Webber are buried in St Peter’s Cemetery in Budleigh Salterton and lived at Jersey Cottages, Granary Lane in the village in the late 1920s.
It may be that they had Sidney’s name put on the war memorial. He seemed to live with them after his mother’s death.
Private 30549 Webber served with the 1st Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment.
He is remembered with honour on Budleigh Salterton War Memorial and the brass plaque in the town’s St Peter’s Church, as well as on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing in Belgium and the Roll of Honour at St Michael and All Angels, Stockland.
