Born in 1889 in Feniton to John Griffin and Mary Jane (Capron), John lived in Talaton with his parents and siblings. In 1911 he was living in Fore Street, Budleigh Salterton, as an apprentice butcher with the Sellek family.
He married Ada Slater in 1913 in St Peter’s Church and their son John W G Griffin was baptised there in 1914. They lived in Frewins and he was a keen sportsman. John served with the Army Service Corps in the Middle East and died of dysentery in Mesopotamia, modern-day Iraq.
His wife and child returned to her home area of Staffordshire where Ada died in 1925 when her son was 11 years old. John is remembered on the War Memorial and the brass plaque in St Peter’s Church, Budleigh Salterton, and at the Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.
