Born in Budleigh Salterton, Thomas lived in Chapel Street with his mother and grandmother, and by 1911 was a cellarman at Perriams and living in Perriams Place.
He became a gunner in the 203rd Siege Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery. Siege Batteries used heavy howitzers to land shells on enemy artillery and positions.
On hearing that her son had been killed, Cecilia Teed, then aged 50, died on 15 October 1917 and is buried in St Peter’s Cemetery in Budleigh. Thomas is remembered with honour on the Budleigh Salterton War Memorial and the brass plaque in St Peter’s Church, and at Coxyde Military Cemetery in Belgium.
