Born in Thorn Mill, East Budleigh to farmer John Hallet and Fanny Jane (Lawrence), Henry lived there until 1911 when he is recorded in Bournemouth as a baker.
His parents moved to Ottery St Mary. Private Hallett served in the 15th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry, a regiment which saw action in every major battle of the Western Front. His brother Frank was born in 1893 and enlisted in the Devonshire Regiment in September 1914.
He married Myra Ellen Utting in 1917 in Norfolk. They had two children born in Devon. Frank died in 1952 – in Budleigh Salterton Hospital following an accident – and is buried in St Peter’s Cemetery, Moor Lane where his wife was later buried in 1963. Henry Robert is remembered on the War Memorial and the brass plaque in St Peter’s Church, and at the Hermonville Military Cemetery in France.

Henry Hallett was my great uncle. He was one of eight children. His older brother John Hallett also enlisted and served on the Somme as a farrier. He married Alpha Kate Gray on 1 January 1920 in Otterton. They moved to live in Pontllanfraith in Monmouthshire and worked as a ganger of the railway and had one daughter, Marjorie Frank Hallett, his brother, was later the postman in Budleigh Salterton and was killed when he had an accident on his bike at Moor Lane in Budleigh. He and his wife had no children
