What we know about PALMER Arthur

The son of Alfred and Mary Jane Palmer, Arthur Palmer was born in East Budleigh around the year 1874. He had a brother, William, who was also killed in the war.

Arthur, the husband of Jeanette Palmer, served in the 8^th Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment, after having enlisted in Exmouth.

The Battalion, together with the 9^th Battalion, landed in Le Havre, France, in July 1915, and the following month became part of the 20^th Brigade of the 7^th Division.

Private 14409 Palmer was killed in action on 25 September 1915, which was the first day of the Battle of Loos, in which the Devonshires suffered heavy losses.

He is remembered with honour on the Loos Memorial in France, alongside 20,000 other men who have no known grave. He is also remembered on memorials in East Budleigh, Exmouth and Seaton.
