The brother of Albert and Arthur, Charles Stuart was born in East Budleigh in 1895, the son of William Henry and Elizabeth Ann Stuart, of Brookside Cottage.
Like Albert and Arthur, Charles served in the Devonshire Regiment. Unlike his brothers, who were in Iraq, Charles served on the Western Front. Private 10787 Stuart was with the 8th Battalion, which on 25 September 1915 suffered incredibly heavy casualties in the Battle of Loos.
Charles died that day, aged 20, and is remembered with honour on the Loos Memorial to more than 20,000 men who have no known grave, and on the East Budleigh memorials.
